Nothing very interesting was revealed apart from what appears to be a PCB manufacturing code under one of the custom chips: M064-007. Shortly after, I noticed they were already conveniently printed on the silkscreen. Prior to the strip, I had the components references written down on a simplified schematic to remember which went in each position. I didn't bother removing the DIP (!!) 68000 and the YM2610 because there weren't many traces vanishing underneath. Getting rid of the components was going to make following them by translucency easier, so the board got a nice hot air strip: Going into more details meant I had to beep some traces. They're located right next to the pull-up arrays for the inputs above the JAMMA edge, which makes perfect sense. Probably because of the higher cost of assembling SMD components, they decided to use through-hole resistor arrays for the video DAC instead of the individual SMD resistors found on the MV1FZ. They didn't go full cheapo with this board, everything is present so the checks would have probably passed (I didn't have those games to try it). Some late games attempt to detect bootleg systems by running checks on startup, locking up if they find that the RTC or if the often unused higher part of VRAM were left out. The 4-layer board obviously plays an important role here. They didn't put any special effort where it wasn't needed: unlike SNK, they succeeded in making the board small enough without having to pack up the standard logic chips into ASICs. Maybe the reduced board size was one of their sales arguments.īeing familiar with the MVS architecture makes it easy to split the board in sections: Surprising for a bootleg (understand "cost optimized") system from the mid-90's. By looking at the traces on the main board, I noticed that it had 4 layers, unlike the slot board which only had 2 ! Having both boards made by two different factories or assembly lines didn't make sense at first. The soldermask color difference between the two boards is striking. There are no components on the back sides. Here's the main board and the vertical slot board, which I desoldered for easier stripping: Amusingly, this board even has a few advantages over the legit version: there's a red LED to indicate when power is applied, the RTC and backup RAM battery causing corrosion damage on many original boards is replaced by a more chemically stable supercap, all ROMs are socketed, and the volume potentiometer is much more sturdy. Distropia also recalled that it ran his games without any problems. It has the form factor of an MV1FZ and apparently full compatibility with the only two games I own: Metal Slug X and King of Fighters 99. Pictures of different versions (of possibly different manufacturers) can be found online, but I hadn't seen any of this one before. Such boards are rare to come across today but they have been known to exist for a while. The particular board version he got hold of is unknown. It's worth noting that forum member Nightmare Tony (RIP), who was an SNK US technician wrote that he had to dissect such a board at the time and found out that the custom chips were Texas Instruments ASICs. Cette page a au moins 5 ans ! This page is at least 5 years old !ĭistropia ( sent me this peculiar board after I've asked publicly if anyone had bootleg NeoGeo MVS boards for sale, dead or alive. Ellis plays the straight woman to the comics around her, but she always maintains a memorable presence, and she suffers no bullcrap. The whole cast keeps the jokes running smoothly I can't recall a minute where "Undercover Brother" ran aground. And then there's White She Devil (Denise Richards), The Man's secret weapon bombshell (she's referred to as "Black Man's Kryptonite"), a pouty sexpot who's equally alluring whether she's wearing librarian glasses or white leather that fits like latex. There's Sistah Girl (Aunjanue Ellis), who slinks around in a variety of fabulous disguises and is the single most efficient member of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. There's Smart Brother (Gary Anthony Williams), who carries a storeroom of knowledge in his brain, including the historical facts to knock down some of Conspiracy Brother's claims with one blow. There's Conspiracy Brother (David Chappelle), whose chief activities consist of smoking weed and concocting ever more outlandish examples of how white folk have suppressed and ripped off the black man. Luckily, an organization known as the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D., led by the Chief (Chi McBride), has been tracking The Man's activities, and seeks the help of Undercover Brother to stop them.Įven the names of the characters in "Undercover Brother" are a spoof: They're descriptive but impersonal, a witty jibe at the way it's always the black guy whose name you never learn who gets eaten by the dinosaur in movies. Feather (the devilishly funny Chris Kattan), gets to him, he has decided instead to open a chain of fried chicken restaurants. But by the time The Man's evil henchman, Mr. The extremely popular Boutwell is just about to announce his candidacy for the presidency. The setup is clever in itself: A nefarious underground group, headed by The Man, has launched a scheme to control the minds of people everywhere, starting with that previously mentioned black politico, Gen. "Undercover Brother" is a joyful mix of high and low humor, pulled off with style and an eye for glamour (Danielle Hollowell deserves special praise for her costumes she's the high priestess of fitted snakeskin). But then, even though the best comedies are always about something more than the sum of their gags, the gags matter too. That's the kind of joke that's subtle enough to make you feel you're not being banged over the head, but not so subtle that it can't make an audience howl. The other notes how well he's doing in the polls - "And not just in the urban areas!" One of my favorite jokes in "Undercover Brother" features two cheerful, robotic newscasters who evaluate an African-American political candidate by praising his attributes: "He's so well spoken!" one says. This is a movie that explodes the racist shorthand that we see everyday in a world where well-meaning liberals and closet bigots alike sometimes find themselves bumbling their way through the forest of racial awareness. Lee ("The Best Man"), "Undercover Brother" is light and swift and stealthily intelligent it's the kind of racial humor (not to be confused with racist humor) that completely ignores race divisions, leaving no group unskewered. Written by John Ridley (who wrote the script for "Three Kings" and also conceived the Internet cartoon series on which "Undercover Brother was based) and directed by Malcolm D. "Undercover Brother" has no plot to speak of, but that's hardly a liability: It simply means there's no pesky story to get in the way of its magnificent gags, which follow one after the other with astonishing consistency. We never get tired of looking at him or his outfits - he's the culmination of everything we love about pop culture when it reaches its boldest, most beautiful extremes. Undercover Brother is the spiritual twin to Austin Powers like Mike Myers' fabled superspy, he represents the gold standard of exaggerated stereotypes. He's driving smoothly but recklessly in a gold Cadillac convertible, taking hairpin turns without spilling a drop of the orange Big Gulp he's holding in his nondriving hand. When we first get a look at Eddie Griffin as crime fighter Undercover Brother, we recognize him immediately as a lavish cartoon in his mile-high Afro and buttery eggplant leather jacket trimmed with sharp piping. "Undercover Brother" isn't so much a spoof of '70s blaxploitation movies as it is its own smart, hilarious (and sometimes cutting) entity - its funky raffishness is hard to resist. I was lucky to get the inside scoop from Christ Kallas, Associate Brand Manager at Ferrara Candy Shop, about fan favorite Yipes and the character’s personality in and out of the office. Here at PopIcon, we’ve got a special place for the story of Yipes. Fruit Stripe Gum has a mascot, it is a Zebra, and the Zebra’s name is Yipes. Mentions of Yipes are few and far in between, with most websites only in agreement about the brand mascot basics. Surprisingly, there is not much information available online about this character. Kid me and adult me have never forgotten the friendly face of the Fruit Stripe Zebra mascot, Yipes. Fruit Stripe famously packaged wet ‘em and wear ‘em tattoos and encouraged bubble gum lovers to collect all of ‘em.Ĭool, fake tattoos and candy? Totally a kid’s paradise! And, of course, we can’t forget about the awesome freebie inside each pack. The colorful Fruit Stripe packaging made it easy to spot this gum in the candy aisle. There’s the gum itself, easy to chew and pop bubbles with its five delicious, fruity flavors. The 90s gum and candy industries primarily imitated the society around them, adopting trends that ranged from the sugar-free lifestyle gums made for adults to the novelties that catered to the more sophisticated adolescent and preteen audience.Everything about Fruit Stripe Gum is delightful, especially when you’re a kid growing up alongside the brand. As an eye-catching appearance may go a long way in getting chewing gum or bubble gum pulled from the packed shelves at the candy store or supermarket, novelty packaging became a big part of this “gum and candy race.” We’ve just explored some of the most loved 90s gum. Life Savers were purchased by Nabisco in 1981, while Bubble Yum was purchased by The Hershey Company in 2000. The gum’s sales quickly overtook those of Life Savers candies, making it the most widely used brand of bubble gum. To put an end to the myth ( that the spider eggs were in the gum product) and regain the public’s trust, the Life Savers Company responded to the situation with an official full-page denial that was published in eminent American newspapers. Bubble Yum was definitely the gum to buy if you wanted some soft gum and a higher possibility of blowing bubbles.Ĭurrently, the Hershey Company markets bubble gum under the name Bubble Yum. Even though it didn’t last very long, it was indeed one of the most beloved 90s gum. Louis-based Life Savers confectionery business. The Baseball Hall of Fame has officially endorsed it, and it is being marketed as “Hall of Fame Bubble Gum.”Ī fellow Maverick and former All-Star for the New York Yankees, Jim Bouton then proposed it to the Wrigley Company, the longstanding owners of the Chicago Cubs, as a humorous parody of the tobacco-chewing custom that was popular among athletes in the 1970s. “You’re in the big leagues when you’re into Big League Chew!” was the initial advertising tagline used during the 1980s. The majority of flavors of Bubble Tape are from the Hubba Bubba regular brand of chewing gum. Over 1 million containers of Bubble Tape were produced each week at the height of its production. Everyone loved the 90s gum, Bubble Tape.ĭue to its distinctive packaging and direct marketing to adolescent children, it reached its peak popularity in the early 1990s. The early 1990s advertising specifically targeted children who were tired of bothersome adults with the phrase “for you, not them,” which contributed to the popularity of this gum among young people. In a hockey-puck-sized circular plastic “tape” dispenser, there were six feet of spiral-wrapped bubblegum. In all of its remarkable tape-likeness, bubble tape is still in use today. A Hubba Bubba variety called Bubble Tape was first developed in 1988 by the Wm. Then, as was common in the big downtown movie palaces of the time, what follows is a limited stage show. It begins with a movie audience watching a faux newsreel followed by a cartoon (featuring Bimbo and Koko). In fact the best thing about this short is that, in cartoon terms, it describes what going to the movies was like in the early 1930s. Wikipedia describes Stopping the Show, the first official "Betty Boop Cartoon" (though she'd appeared in earlier Fleischer shorts), as set in a Vaudeville house but that's not really correct. Included this time are: Stopping the Show (1932), Snow White (1933), Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, She Wronged Him Right, Red Hot Mamma, Poor Cinderella, There's Something About a Soldier, When My Ship Comes In (all 1934), Zula Hula (1937), Riding the Rails, The Swing School, Pudgy the Watchman, and Sally Swing (all 1938). What's important though is that these logos aside, the shorts themselves all look fantastic, especially considering their age, convoluted ownership and distribution history. Presumably that's because their original negatives were cut in order to release the picture (but not the audio) with the logo of the U.M.&M.TV Corp., who syndicated the cartoons beginning in 1955. Most are missing their original Paramount logos and credits, and where those exist the majority are doctored. Happily, the shorts here have been remastered in 4K using the original negatives and, in some cases, fine grains. Further, like various Popeye cartoons and most (all?) of the Superman cartoons, many Betty Boop shorts apparently have fallen into public domain, and home video versions of those shorts have been of variable quality. Though hugely popular in their day, probably because the Betty Boop cartoons were made in black and white, their marketability has nonsensically been limited in recent decades. As animation historian Leonard Maltin and others have pointed out, where Disney exploited the natural fears of children, the Fleischers' cartoons explore the darker psychology of adults. She had no idea Betty Boop cartoons even existed.)īut Betty's best, the two-dozen or so cartoons from 1932-34, and even many of those made later on, positively ooze the Fleischer house style, one more adult and far more surreal than their rivals, with imagery at times more Dali than Disney. (Here in Japan, I recently asked a young woman carrying a Betty Boop handbag if she was a fan of the cartoons. Betty never lost her charm, however, and soldiered on through the end of the 1930s, often with Betty playing a supporting part in her own cartoons (she's not even in the very last "Betty Boop"), though her image can still be found on merchandise everywhere, all over the world. Indeed, so sexy was "The Queen of the Animated Screen" that like Mae West and Maureen O'Sullivan's Jane in the early Tarzan films, Hollywood's Production Code eventually insisted Betty "put more clothes on," and forced her to assume a subtly degrading, housewifey demureness, no matter that she was single. Last time, as you'll recall, Max and Dave Fleischer's trifecta of classic animation series, one that included the black-and-white and early color "Popeye" cartoons and the first screen appearance of "Superman," began with a uniquely hallucinatory series of one-reel cartoons eventually starring Betty Boop, the innocent but sexy jazz baby, a throwback to the risqué Roaring Twenties. Moreover, the picture quality remains supremely high and, overall, this is a real feast for the eyes. Most of these cartoons feature early TV syndication titles replacing Paramount's originals, though several here happily include the original Paramount logo. This collection generally shows off Betty at her absolutely best, however, highlighted by an amazing color adaptation of Cinderella, a short that, all by itself, is worth the price of the disc. As with Volume 3, they span Betty's early peak years, from 1932, focusing mainly on its 1934 season, and the series' slight decline through 1938, with Betty unceremoniously off on the sidelines while the Fleischers attempted to establish new cartoon stars. Olive Films has yet another dazzling collection of Paramount-licensed Max and Dave Fleischer cartoons in Betty Boop: The Essential Collection, Volume 4, 13 more razor-sharp one-reel shorts.
